Obituary for Benny Rhodes

Lonnie Benjamin “Benny” Rhodes, III, 81, of Moss Hill passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on May 30, 2018. He was born on April 17, 1937.

Benny grew up in Moss Hill and was known for his love of the community as well as his love for Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, where he was a life-long member. He was a scout in Boy Scout Troop 241 and was the first Boy Scout to become certified as an Eagle Scout in Moss Hill in 1954. Benny graduated from Moss Hill High School in 1955 and pursued a degree in Agriculture from North Carolina State. During his time at North Carolina State, Benny achieved what would become one of his proudest accomplishments: he served as the North Carolina State Treasurer of the Future Farmers of America alongside the State President, Governor Jim Hunt. After his time at North Carolina State, he continued his education at Atlantic Christian College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1960. For the next few years, Benny worked as a teacher and coach at Seven Springs High School. Benny clearly treasured the years he spent as an educator alongside his wife, Anne. His relationships with students and their families would extend far beyond the halls at Seven Springs High School. He began farming full-time in 1965 and happily drove a tractor until he was eighty-one years old.

When Benny wasn’t driving his tractor through the fields, you could find him at the White Oak River, where he spent many hours as an avid fisherman. Above all, Benny loved spending time with his friends and family, particularly his children and grandchildren. You could always count on Benny to host a great gathering, whether it be a Saturday night family dinner or his annual Fourth of July get-together on the White Oak River. He always looked forward to college football and basketball season when he would support his alma mater, North Carolina State.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne Ball Rhodes; his parents, L.B. and Janie Barwick Rhodes; and his brother Freddy Rhodes.

Benny is survived by his daughter, Debra Rhodes Gladstone and her husband, Bill; his son, Ben Rhodes and his wife, Sherrie; his grandchildren, Anne Gladstone, Alex Rhodes, Mary Kate Gladstone, Laine Gladstone, Zachary Rhodes, Meredith Rhodes, and Betsy Gladstone; his sister-in-law, Betty Lou Mozingo Rhodes; his nephew, Frederick Rhodes and his wife, Pam, and their son, Matthew; his niece, Sherri Rhodes Whitaker and her husband, Richard; and friend, Donnie Byrd.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who visited with Benny over the course of his illness. Similarly, they appreciate the care and support provided by Dr. Gary Heck and 3HC.
