Obituary for Elsie Smith Rouse

Kinston-Elsie Louise Smith Rouse, 80, of Kinston, peacefully passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Elsie was born October 9, 1937 in Lenoir County to the late George James Smith, Sr. and Mary Alice Skinner Smith.

Elsie graduated from Wheat Swamp High School where she starred on the basketball team. Always competitive, she later took interest in golf and enjoyed the challenges of playing the piano. Fiercely independent, strong willed and most might say stubborn, Elsie loved doing things her way. Driven and always moving forward with a purpose, you were wise to stay out her way when her mind was made up.

She liked nothing better than working out in her yard or the garden. Never one to let health challenges get her down, she could often be seen zooming across the yard to tackle her next project.

Elsie’s family has many fond memories of her home cooking. They liked nothing better than gathering around the table in fellowship and enjoying her wonderful cornbread or holiday marinated ribeye roast. A piece of good lemon pie or nabs and Pepsi always brought a smile to her face. Elsie will be deeply missed and always remembered.

A memorial service to celebrate Elsie’s life will be held Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 3 p.m. from Faith Fellowship Church with Dr. Randy Spaugh and Rev. David Cauley officiating.

Elsie is survived by a loving family that includes her husband of 62 years, Gary E. Rouse; daughter, Cindy Watts and husband, Martin; two grandchildren, Gary-Martin Watts and wife, Ashley Lynn, and Suzanne Louise Watts; great-grandchild, Maxwell David Watts; seven siblings, Willie James Smith, Edward Thomas Smith, Mary Helen Holland, Thelma Barrow, George Smith Jr., John Shepherd Smith and Maezell Smith Cauley. In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Edward Rouse; three siblings, Mabel Hill, Dee Barwick Smith and Ray Harold Smith.

A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the memorial service on Sunday. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Memorials may be made to Faith Fellowship, 2278 Paul’s Path Road, Kinston, NC 28504. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
