Obituary for Shirley Mason Herring

Kinston- Shirley Mason Herring, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 in Kinston, NC after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 17, 1935 in Clarksburg, WVA, the daughter of Dale and Margie Mason. She graduated from Shinnston High School and the University of Virginia School Of Nursing.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Dr. Charles L. Herring of Kinston, NC, son C.L. (Debbie) Herring of Greenville, NC and daughter, Becky Herring (Tom) Mitchell of Chapel Hill, NC. Her grandchildren include Charlie (Bridget) Herring of Greenville, NC, Lauren Herring (fiancée Dylan Cole) of Greenville, SC, and Ainsley Mitchell of Chapel Hill, NC. Her great niece, Sharon Martin (Steve) Roy of Shinnston, WVA, also survives her as well as numerous nephews around the country. Her brother, Ronnie (Katie) Mason of Holton KS, predeceased her, as did her parents.

Recognized as a local and state civic leader, Shirley Herring served on the NC Board of Elections from 1977-1981; the Professional Educational Organization Board (PEO), the NC Museum of History Board on various committees for six years, and as State President of the NC Medical Auxiliary from 1975-1976. She served on the Tryon Palace Council of Friends, Community Council for the Arts, S.P.C.A., President of the Lenoir County Historical Association, President of Lenoir-Greene-Jones Medical Auxiliary, and long-standing member of Pride of Kinston Board. The Kinston Rotary Club recognized her as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2005, and the Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce awarded her the Outstanding Community Female Leadership Award by in 2010.

Shirley was passionate about gardening, antiquing, and traveling. She was a doting grandmother and loving mother and wife who cared deeply about her family, friends, and community.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 3:00 pm at Gordon Street Christian Church in Kinston, NC. A reception will be held afterwards at the Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Gordon Street Christian Church, 118 E. Gordon St. Kinston, NC 28501 in recognition of the Memorial Garden that Shirley Herring created or to Pride of Kinston, 327 N. Queen St, Kinston, NC 28501 in recognition of the historic Maplewood Cemetery project that she was co-chairing.
