Obituary for Tootsie Owens

Alma Sugg “Tootsie” Owens, 85, of Kinston, quietly and peacefully slipped away to her Heavenly reward on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Tootsie was born September 28, 1932 in Greene County to the late Samuel C. Sugg, Jr. and Hazel Ormond Sugg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Owens, Jr.

Tootsie’s relationship with Christ was the focal point in her life. Blessed with a true servant’s heart and a warm sweet spirit, Tootsie’s faith in Jesus and concern for others was exhibited in all she did. She has been a member of Neuse Baptist Church for over 60 years. Tootsie often visited the sick and homebound. With her bright smile and words of encouragement Tootsie brought much joy to those she came in contact with during her journey through life.

Though Tootsie accomplished much and blessed so many people in countless ways, she would probably say her greatest accomplishment would be her family. She savored her role as matriarch of the family. Nothing was better to her than being wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family has many fond memories of gatherings around her table. No one fried chicken and did southern cooking better. Her grandchildren always looked forward to her fantastic breakfasts, banana pudding, cookies and marshmallows.

Her personality shone through in everything she tackled. With Tootsie, it was all about presentation. From her appearance to the way she presented a meal, everything had to be in its proper place. Tootsie’s eye for detail served her well in her love of art. Many have been blessed with a Tootsie Owens original painting.

Together with her husband, Harvey, they owned and operated the Service Spot Grocery & Café for many years. She loved the many friendships made during this time. May her memory shine brightly.

A service to celebrate Tootsie’s life will be held Friday, July 27, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Tootsie is survived by four children, Connie Waters and husband, Danny, Harvey Dalton Owens and wife, Dianne, Wendy Anderson and husband, Crandall, and Robin Reavis and husband, Stephen; nine grandchildren, Traci Howard and husband, Shawn, Danny Waters Jr. and wife, Lindsay, Harvey Dustin Owens and wife, Tara, Dayna Owens, Jordan Anderson, Bailey Anderson, Zachary Baker and fiancé, Stormy, Gracie Reavis and Wyatt Reavis; five great-grandchildren, Keelin Howard, Gage Howard, Crayden Waters, Ashley Houghton and Levi Owens; great-great grandchild, Ashton Carlyle; and a brother, Samuel Clayton Sugg, III and wife, Linda. In addition to her parents and husband, Tootsie was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Albritton and Alice Hill.

Family and friends will be received Friday from 10-11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.Tootsie's family will also receive friends at the Owens home from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
