Obituary for Elma Thornton Smith

Elma T. Smith
August 30, 1929 - October 26, 2018

While surrounded by her family, Elma Thornton Smith, 89, of Goldsboro, peacefully passed away to her heavenly reward on Friday, October 26, 2018. Elma was born August 30, 1929 in Grantham to the late Ernie Talton Thornton and Lou Britt Thornton.

Elma grew up in Grantham as part of a farming family. She learned the value of family and the meaning of hard work. Alongside her brothers, she didn’t hesitate to do any of the work they did. Elma later attended nursing school and became a registered nurse. Taking care of others and pleasing everyone she came in contact with was a way of life for her. As her family grew in size, she devoted all her energies toward her family.

Elma’s greatest accomplishment and treasure was her family. As a wife, she cared for her husband and supported him throughout his career. As a mother and grandmother she was the perfect role model. Her caring ways, gentle hugs, bright smile, words of wisdom and her ability to handle crisis are cherished by her family. Elma’s family has many fond memories of her wonderful cooking. Her country-style cooking, meatloaf and famous chocolate pie were always welcome sights. Good laughter, good fellowship, along with good food made for many great times around Elma’s table.

A true prayer warrior, Elma was passionate about her belief in her Lord. She was a lady of great faith and was always in the scriptures to deepen her faith. Elma worshiped at Garris Chapel United Methodist Church. The music and hymns of the church often brought tears as she reflected on her blessings.

With Elma, everything had to be perfect. She was determined that all she did would be done to the best of her ability. She was always the “manager” of things, and her commitment to excellence was ever evident. Always organized, Elma liked everything being in its proper place. The warmth of Elma’s love for her family will continue to be felt in their hearts for all of time and eternity.

Services to celebrate Elma’s life will be held Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Garris Chapel United Methodist Church . Visitation with family and friends will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a church service to follow at 2 p.m. Entombment will take place at Wayne Memorial Park.

Elma is survived by her soulmate and husband of 68 years, Kyle Thornton Smith; four children, Deborah Scaperoth and husband, Daniel, Beverly Crippen and husband, Steven, Barbara Lewis, Donna Womack and husband, Barry; daughter-in-law, Adair Roberts Smith; sister, Vernell Grantham; brother, Ernie Thornton and wife, Tinkum; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Elma was preceded in death by a son, Gary Dean Smith; and four siblings, Alma, Floyd, John and Earl Thornton.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Memorials in Elma’s memory may be made to Garris Chapel United Methodist Church, 823 Piney Grove Road, La Grange, NC 28551. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
