Obituary for Hazel Craft Skinner

Hazel C. Skinner
February 27, 1929 - February 12, 2019

La Grange-While surrounded by her family, Hazel Craft Skinner, 89, peacefully passed in the late evening hours of Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Hazel was born February 27, 1929 in Lenoir County to the late Johnny Nick Craft and Maggie Allen Craft. Her beloved husband, Norman Dempsey Skinner, preceded her in death on September 7, 2000.

A longtime member of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, Hazel loved her Lord and her church family. Her demeanor and sweet smile endeared her to all she met. A lady with a strong faith, Hazel spent time in her Bible daily and was a strong believer in the power of prayer. If the doors were open at Trinity, Hazel was going to be there. She loved helping with Vacation Bible School and sang in the choir from 1977-2016. She truly loved singing for her Lord. She always looked forward to Sunday evening service and getting together with her “Sunday Night Church Crowd” for food and good fellowship.

Hazel had a passion for helping others. She retired from Caswell Center where she worked as a Health Care Technician. Described as slightly curious, nothing got past Hazel. She kept up with everything that took place in her world and you won’t going to slip anything past her.

Hazel was always on the go and looked forward to her next outing. A restaurant with a good buffet was right down Hazel’s alley. A good meal at Murray’s or a trip to Cracker Barrel were sure to bring a big smile.

Hazel’s world revolved around the happiness and well-being of her family. She always beamed with pride when talking about her family. She especially loved spoiling her grandchild, Zach. He could do nothing wrong in her eyes and she always enjoyed “Grandparents Day” at school. Her family did everything possible to avoid getting the look from Miss Hazel. You know she meant business when you got the look. We rejoice in those good memories and look forward to the grand reunion.

A service to celebrate and honor Hazel’s life will be held Saturday, February, 16, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Deborah Riley and husband, Chris, Dawn Daughtry and husband, Scooter; her grandson, Zachariah Norman Dawson; three sisters, Lillie Hill, Alice Sutton and Margaret Short; and her beloved canine companion, Elizabeth. In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by three siblings, Ella Lathan, Dorothy “Dot” Davis and Johnny Nick Craft, Jr.

Family and friends will be received Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange. At other times they will be at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Chris Riley, 4152 Aaron’s Way, La Grange. Online condolences may be expressed at Memorials in Hazel’s memory may be made to Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, 6260 Washington Street, La Grange, NC 28551.
