Obituary for John Dulon Foss

John Dulon Foss
January 26, 1922 - November 4, 2018

La Grange-John Dulon Foss, 96, of La Grange, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 4, 2018. Dulon was born in Jenny Lind to the late Johnnie Franklin Foss and Nannie Kate Anderson Foss. Dulon’s wife, Merle Holmes Foss, preceded him in death on July 14, 1999.

Part of America’s greatest generation, Dulon proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, Dulon was stationed on the Minesweeper YMS 22 patrolling the waters around Newfoundland.

Dulon was one who worked with his hands throughout life. He began his working career as a brick mason and later became a master carpenter. Always attentive to detail, he took great pride in his work.

Dulon was a people person and the life of a party. He lit up any room he entered and was always a magnet for good times. A true bundle of energy, he was often the first to arrive and the last to leave any party or gathering. Dulon met his beloved Merle at a dance, and his thirst for shaking a leg stayed with him to the end. Dulon and his sidekick, Jack Jones, spent many good times together and made many great memories. When the two were together, a good time was had by all.

He always looked forward to a good meal and fellowship with his Bojangles’ buddies. Dulon loved traveling to the coast and in earlier years liked to wet a fishing hook. He found great pleasure in tending his little backyard garden and sharing his bountiful harvest with family and friends.

A service to celebrate and honor Dulon’s life will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery.

Dulon is survived by three children, Judy Mooring and husband, Bob, John Dulon Foss, Jr. and wife, Terry, and Dawn Foss Weaver; seven grandchildren, Trey and Tate Mooring, Daniel and Daly Weaver, Johnna, Jeri and Jenna Foss; three great-grandchildren, Jarrett, Kenley and Hally Fay; special family friends, David Flanagan and Billy Weaver; and his faithful canine companion, Piper. In addition to his parents and wife, Dulon was preceded in death by two children, Merlon Foss and Daly Keith Foss; grandson, Tyler Foss Mooring; and two siblings, Joshua Daly Foss and Peggy Foss Wiggins.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday following the service. At other times they will be at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Mooring, 509 North Caswell Street, La Grange. Memorials may be made to the NC State Veterans Home, 2150 Hull Road, Kinston, NC 28504 or the Lenoir County SPCA, P.O. Box 1481, Kinston, NC 28503. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
