Obituary for Kenneth Skinner

N. Kenneth Skinner
June 7, 1944 - August 23, 2019

Stantonsburg-Nathan Kenneth Skinner, 75, passed away August 23, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Kenneth was born June 7, 1944 to the late Nathan Willis Skinner and Clara Jones Skinner.

In addition to his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Potter Skinner; daughter, Doris Ann Skinner; brother, Charles Allen Skinner; and two sisters, Linda Carol Price and Janet Lynn Skinner.

Kenneth began driving trucks with Old Dominion Freight Line on September 15, 1975 and retired on June 13, 2019. During his 43 years of service he was awarded the One Million Perfect Miles Safety Award in 2002 and Two Million Perfect Miles Safety Award in 2011.

A mama’s boy, Kenneth’s mother stressed the importance of serving the Lord along with taking care of your family and friends. Kenneth credited his driving success to having the Lord alongside him every mile of the way.

Kenneth had a deep passion for the outdoors and fishing. Nothing was more pleasing than the tug of a fish on the line, no matter the size. Kenneth also loved tending to his garden. The simple pleasure of seeing things grow brought tremendous amounts of joy.

Kenneth loved to cook and experiment in the kitchen. His recipe’s were simple. He used a little bit of this and a little bit of that. His family has many fond memories of sitting around his table enjoying good food and fellowship. His fish stews were second to none.

Kenneth loved to see people laugh and enjoy life. You knew he loved and liked you if he was picking on you. He never passed on an opportunity to play a joke on you.

One thing was certain with Kenneth, you never had to wonder where he stood on things. If he thought it, he said it. No bones about it, there was never any doubt that it was his way or the highway.

Christmas was Kenneth’s favorite time of the year. He lived for the Christmas season. The beauty of Christmas, the celebration of the Lord’s birth and the opportunity to help his fellow man were what it was all about.

A memorial service to celebrate Kenneth’s life will be held Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. A private family interment will be held at a later date at Westview Cemetery.

Kenneth is survived by his son, Nathan Kenneth (Ken) Skinner, Jr. and wife, Connie; four grandsons, Jonathan Skinner and wife, Renee, Patrick Skinner, Nathan Kenneth (Kenny) Skinner, III and Matthew Skinner; two sisters, Joyce S.
