Obituary for Lucille Harris McClanahan

Lucille H. McClanahan
May 14, 1923 - October 16, 2018

Lucille Harris “Ganny” McClanahan, 95, was reunited with her beloved husband in eternity on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. Ganny was born May 14, 1923 in Macon, North Carolina to the late Tolly Ransom Harris and Mae Shearin Harris. Her husband, Col. George L. McClanahan, Jr. and two siblings, Edith I. Harris and Tolly R. Harris, Jr. preceded her in death.

Ganny was born during an era of hardship and struggle, but her drive and determination made her an overcomer. She learned early on in life the importance of frugality and hard work. Ganny expressed that because times were tough, she was given only one pair of shoes a year. She was born into a simple, country life and continued to live with simplicity even as an adult. From milking cows to working in the fields, Ganny worked hard on the farm with her family, doing whatever she could to lend a helping hand. At the tender age of 16, Ganny’s world was changed when the humble family home burned down and her dad died. From that point forward, she did all she could to support her family. The oldest of seven children, she was like a second mother to her siblings. Ganny’s early struggles molded her into the strong, independent woman she became.

At the age of 19, Ganny moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed with the government. Ganny initially earned a mere $1,200.00 a year and sent back her extra earnings to provide additional support for her family. While in Washington she met her future husband and at the age of 33 became the wife of Colonel George McClanahan. Ganny was a dedicated military wife and enjoyed being a homemaker after they started their family. Following George’s retirement, the two went on to travel the world. The couple enjoyed a fruitful and happy marriage of 36 years.

Ganny never lost her zest for life. Even in her 80's she didn’t hesitate to climb up on the roof of her house if necessary, and at 88 years old she went zip-lining. Ganny loved being outdoors and was never one to be idle. Her garden was her life and she loved to dig in the dirt. If Ganny could not be outside, she was likely to be straightening up inside her home while listening to her country music. She always maintained a clean and organized environment and was known for saving and repurposing everything.

Family was at the forefront of everything Ganny did. Though she and George spent a good portion of their later years traveling, she would never miss the important events in her family’s lives. Her impeccable memory ensured that she would not forget the details of important dates or events. Ganny had a fierce and unrelenting love for her family. She was always present when needed and was the first to step up in defense of the ones she loved. Ganny’s was a life well-lived, and her example will continue to mold and influence the lives of her family for time and eternity to come.

A service to celebrate and honor Ganny’s life will be held Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Ganny is survived by two daughters, Shanna Denhup and husband, Steve, and Lisa Butman; five grandchildren, Shaun M. Spaulding, Joshua L. Butman, Melissa Butman, Steven Denhup, Jr. and wife, Ashley, and Heather Rae Kuzma; five great-grandchildren, Trevor, Andrew, Ellie, Nate and Luke; four sisters, Bertie H. Stegall, Ruby H. Carroll and husband, Ben, Myrtice H. Bolton and Virgie Roberts; sister-in-law, Jean Harris; brother-in-law, Bill McClanahan; and many beloved nieces, nephews and family relatives.

A time of visitation and fellowship will follow Ganny’s memorial service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
