Obituary for Marjorie Wood Warters

Marjorie W. Warters
March 17, 1940-July 24, 2019

La Grange-Marjorie Wood Warters was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Marjorie was born in Lenoir County to the late Whitford Wood and Cynthia Brittain Wood on March 17, 1940. In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by a very special great-grandson, Kayne Warters.

Marjorie was a teenager when she met and wed Tom, the love of her life. For nearly 61 years the two shared a fruitful and happy marriage. Marjorie was Tom’s sweetheart and she became the backbone of their family. Raising their three children and pulling more than her weight of work on the farm, Marjorie only knew hard work and was determined in all she did.

Life on the farm with her husband meant long and busy days. She started early in the morning and worked on until everyone was fed and put to bed. Her day began in the hog houses as she cared for the stock, but as soon as her chores there were complete, she would be found in the field. She was insistent upon cropping the tobacco as she had done all her life. When the workday drew to an end, Marjorie would return home to cook a full meal for her husband and children. Her cooking was delicious, and her family will long for the taste of her chocolate pie for years to come. She was faithful and dedicated in all she did, and could outwork the best of them.

As much as she loved to work, she knew how to enjoy her time off. Marjorie loved to fish, whether salt or freshwater, and just wanted to be near the water in general. She was crafty and creative and sewed many beautiful quilts. Tending the flowers in her yard likely made her happiest. It didn’t matter what kind they were, she just wanted to watch them grow.

A genuine Christian lady, Marjorie had the faith of Job. Through good times and bad, she trusted the Lord to see her through. Marjorie and Tom were members of Jason Presbyterian Church for many years, and recently attended Snow Hill Presbyterian Church. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is in the arms of Jesus.

A service to remember Marjorie’s life will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Friday, July 26, 2019, at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends in the hour before the service and other times at the home. A private interment will take place at Cobb Cemetery.

Marjorie is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years and 8 months, Ernest Lee “Tom” Warters; three children, Richard Lee Warters and wife, Michelle, Dean Warters and wife, Amy, and Sonia Warters West and husband, David; six grandchildren, Travis Warters, Malisha Warters, D.J. Warters, Tyler Warters, Brianna West, and Alli West; eight precious great-grandchildren; and a very special sister-in-law, Vera “Tink” Smith.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marjorie’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
