Obituary for Rudy Valley Hancock

La Grange-Rudy Valley Hancock, 80, of La Grange, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019. Rudy was born January 23, 1939, in Onslow County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alene Hancock, and his beloved wife of 56 years, Sarah Louise “Weezie” Hancock.

A lifelong farmer, Rudy took great pleasure in his crops and garden. He enjoyed time spent with his hands in the soil, rake or hoe in hand, and harvesting the vegetables he had planted. Some of Rudy’s happiest times were spent on the family farm atop his tractor. As long as Rudy was outside, he was content. An avid outdoorsman, nothing made him happier than to wet a fishing hook. Fishing was Rudy’s opportunity to connect with nature and clear his mind.

Rudy was a man of strong character. His concern for others made him easy to love and appreciate. He was always eager to make sure you had whatever you may need and would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. He was known to be a jokester and liked a good laugh. You knew he loved you if he was picking at you. Rudy was the ultimate grandfather and held a special place in his heart for each of his children and great-grandchildren. Some of his family’s best memories were made sitting around the table after a barbecued pig and a good meal. Rudy is deeply loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.

A service to celebrate Rudy’s life will be held Thursday, March 14, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Murphy Family Cemetery.

Rudy is survived by three children, Steve Hancock and wife, Donna, Bryan Hancock and companion, Mary Henderson, and Sharon Abreu and husband, Nestor; six grandchildren, Jason, Steven and wife, Katie, Michael, Junior, Shannon, and Kyle and wife, Tahimi; four great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Austin Marie, Emma, and Avery; two siblings, Larry “Mickey” Hancock and Anita Deaver; and a half-sister, Peggy Hancock; and his faithful canine companion, Easy.

Family and friends will be received Wednessday, from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
