Obituary for Walter Richard Crumbacker

Walter R. Crumbacker
October 10, 1941-February 24, 2019

La Grange-Walter Richard “Bud” Crumbacker, 77, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019. Bud was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Harry and Dorothy Berger Crumbacker on October 10, 1941. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Derick James Anthony Shaw; and a brother, David Crumbacker.

Bud was passionate about joining the military from an early age. The Marine Corps was his aim, but following his parents’ wishes, he first served in the Army and Navy. His heart, however, still belonged to the Corps and he continued to pursue that passion until he had the opportunity to serve. Bud was proud to serve his country in three branches of the military and continued to live his life as an American patriot.

His love of the military carried over into his television preferences. He was a fan of the History Channel and would become immersed in their war specials. He enjoyed watching Westerns and was enthralled by a good “who done it” special. The softer side of Bud was expressed when he would tune in to the Hallmark Channel, especially during the Christmas season.

As well-rounded as they come, Bud was a man of many talents and tastes. From time spent painting to listening to the sounds of classical music, the arts were such a big part of Bud’s life. He was a gifted cook with special dishes like his homemade rice pudding, ribs on the grill, and his one-of-a-kind crab cakes. Bud would whip up a large breakfast or invite family over for a barbecue and always provided the most delicious meals. Many fond memories were made with Bud during times spent around his table.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Eastern Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 12 noon.

Bud is survived by his wife of nearly 35 years, Sharon McCulloch Crumbacker, three children, Richard Crumbacker and wife, Barbara, Cathy Matz and husband, Chris, and Dorothy Crumbacker; seven grandchildren, Richard Crumbacker, Jr., Summer Jackson, Katelyn Shaw and fiancé, Jonathan, Marissa Lewis and husband, Josh, Dane Crumbacker, James Peterson, and Kyle Peterson; eight great-grandchildren, Julian, Amare, Jalen, Aaden, Gracelyn, Easton, Derick, and Kinley; and a brother, Harry Crumbacker, Jr.

Online condolences may be expressed at Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home.
