Obituary for Willard Colie

Rev. Willard Colie, Sr.
September 29, 1930 - April 25, 2019

La Grange-Rev. Willard Colie Sr., 88, received his Heavenly promotion on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Willard was born September 29, 1930 in Wayne County to the late Leon Colie and Annie Mozingo Colie.

Willard proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the Order Of Red & Gold of the 48th Field Artillery Battalion. Following his military service, Willard farmed for many years and later retired from the North Carolina ABC Commission.

Willard loved the outdoors and piddling around his barn and yard. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. His family has many fond memories of his duct tape fixes. When all else failed just apply duct tape.

Fishing and oystering were the perfect way to end a hard weeks work. The problems of this world were always forgotten when Willard was casting nets or had a rod in his hand. He loved being out in nature and witnessing God’s creations. Bird watching from his back porch was often the perfect relaxation for Willard.

Willard adhered to three primary principles during his life: The belief and power of God, family, and country. His faith in the Lord was the compass that guided Willard in all his endeavors.

Taking Ephesians 5:19 to heart, Willard used his gift of music to fulfill the commandment, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. His talents for playing the guitar and keyboard allowed him the opportunity to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Always the perfectionist when it came to his music, everything had to be just right. Willard’s family was blessed with musical gifts and talents as well, and his family will always hold close the memories of playing country and gospel sounds together.

Next to the Lord, there was no one he loved more than his wife, Mary. While Willard was serving his country, Mary was at home in Kentucky praying for those in the military. She received a list of names belonging to men who were abroad, and people were asked to choose a person to pray for. Mary chose Willard’s name. Little did she know that her prayers for Willard’s safety would be the same prayers that bound the two together. After becoming pen-pals and sharing with one another through letters and notes, Willard was finally able to return home to meet the woman who had become the love of his life. Together, the two raised their family and humbly served the Lord.

Willard was the proud patriarch and champion for his family. He worked hard to provide for and protect his family. He was the ultimate supporter and cheerleader for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Faithful and loving, Willard was humble, a great listener and always offered the perfect advice.

A graveside service to celebrate Willard’s life will be held Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery.

Willard is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Mary Hutton Colie; six children, Rev. Willard “Mickey” Colie Jr., Dawn Renee Colie Price and husband, Eddie, Anita Ann Colie Stanley, April Lee Colie, Melodia Lynn Colie Outlaw and husband, Tony, and Kim Dee Colie Hughes and husband, Cary; eleven grandchildren, Robert Colie, Bobby Colie, Raven Colie, Sierra Colie, Ryan Boothe, Ethan Price, Brianna Colie, Jamie Outlaw, Scott Outlaw, Alex Hughes and Jordan Hughes; nine great-grandchildren, Kevin, Logan, Tyler, Ayden, Corbin, Caroline, Loclyn, Emma and Gracie; and a sister, Ruth Rose and husband, Buddy.
