Obituary for Leland Monroe Heath, Jr.

Kinston- Leland Monroe Heath, Jr., 75, of Kinston, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a long battle with respiratory disease. Leland was born September 29, 1942 in Lenoir County to the late Leland Monroe Heath and Elma Wortham Heath. A son, Leland Monroe Heath III, preceded him in death, as well as his father-in-law, Charles Avery.

Leland grew up in Deep Run and graduated from Deep Run High School, after which he graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) with a B.A. in History and Sociology. Following, he graduated from UNC-CH School of Law with a Juris Doctorate, and completed Duke University Divinity School’s Course of Study.

He practiced law from 1972-1988 and then had various other professions until 1996, when he felt a call from his Lord that changed the direction of his life forever. This call from the Lord set his heart on serving God and His people as a United Methodist minister. He pastored several congregations in eastern North Carolina, retiring in June of 2017.

Leland served as a board member and Vice President of Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation.

He was passionate about serving his Lord and serving others, and considered his friends as true friends for life. Leland has always been fascinated with old cars. When at home, nothing was better than watching the latest episode of American Pickers or any show dealing with the restoration of old cars. Leland was an avid reader and loved the challenge of a good crossword puzzle.

A service to celebrate and honor Leland’s life will be held Friday, February 9, 2018, at 6 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Leland is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Joy Avery Heath; granddaughter, Elisabeth Heath, of Washington, N.C.; his sister, Anne H. Tew (Ed) of Apex; his mother-in-law, Joyce H. Avery of Kinston; brothers-in-law, Chris Avery (LeAnne) of Kinston and Larry Avery (Patty) of Matthews; several nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Josie Heath-Earley; along with some very special friends.
