Obituary for William Hayes Koonce

Kinston-William Hayes Koonce, 82, of Kinston, peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018. Hayes was born November 8, 1935 in Lenoir County to the late Zack Amos Koonce, Sr. and Leah Stilley Koonce.

Loving, caring, and kind, Hayes relished his role as patriarch of the family. His happiest moments were when all the family was gathered together.

Hayes proudly served his country in the Army National Guard for 9 years. A hard-working man his entire life, Hayes enjoyed country living and the life of the farmer. From 1962-2008, Hayes worked with Austin-Carolina Tobacco Company as Night Shift Supervisor. Over the last ten years, Hayes worked with Industrial Rewind.

Never idle and always busy, Hayes loved spending time working and tinkering in his shop. Weekends were spent riding through the country to find the latest yard sale and deal. He and Carolyn enjoyed weekend driving trips exploring the countryside of North Carolina. Most outings required a stop at Bojangles for his favorite meal.

Hayes had a deep passion for the outdoors and fishing. A tug on the line, no matter the size, always brought great pleasure. He enjoyed getting out on his four-wheeler, playing with his iPad, and sitting back in his chair watching his big-screen television.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Kinston.

A true southern gentleman, Hayes is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Hughes Koonce; two children, Terry Koonce and special friend, Pam, and Carla Casey and husband, George; four grandchildren, Brad Koonce and wife, Wendy, Nicholas Casey and special friend, Morgan, Justin Casey and special friend, Olivia, and Amanda Casey; great-grandson, Bryson Koonce; and his four-legged friends, Lillie and Scooter. In addition to his parents, Hayes was preceded in death by four siblings, Z.A. Koonce, Jr., Doris Broome, Bobbie Bradshaw and Billie Cobb.

The Koonce family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of UNC Lenoir Healthcare, Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Pastor Allen Ham, Dr. Peter Watson, Dr. Edgar Moore and his favorite nurse, Lisa, for their loving care and support of Hayes. Words can’t begin to express our gratitude to this wonderful group of people.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Memorials may be made to either the North Lenoir Volunteer Fire Department or Elroy Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
