Obituary for Retha Tilghman Pearson

Retha T. Pearson
February 27, 1931- March 7, 2018

Kinston-Retha Tilghman Pearson of Kinston entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Retha was born February 27, 1931 in Lenoir County to the late Luther Earnest Tilghman and Zilla Merritt Tilghman. Retha was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Raymond S. Pearson, and her longtime friend, Linda Jane Carter.

Fiercely independent, Retha liked things her way. She kept an immaculate home and was proud to run a tight ship, with everything orderly and in its place. Always a lady of her word, she lived a life of honesty and dependability.

Christmas was Retha’s favorite time of year. Her daughter, Becky, has many fond memories of the Saturday’s they shared shopping together in downtown Kinston. Recently, Retha took great pleasure in spending time with her “Bojangles family.”

Retha always conquered anything she put her mind to. Throughout her life she demonstrated her craftiness in woodworking, cake decorating, etched glass, frame and furniture restoration, and flower arranging. She enjoyed sewing and often made the clothing her daughter wore as a child. Retha’s sewing skills expanded into making curtains and even crocheting. The Singer Sewing Machine Museum displays several sewing machines sold by Retha. She was always a lady of many great talents.

The “golden oldies” and music from the World War II era always caught Retha’s ear. She enjoyed music and loved to sing. Her outstanding vocals won her the first prize in a singing contest as a child.

Retha was dearly loved by so many. Each of the children she babysat over the years made their way into her heart. Retha’s love and memory will continue to live on through her family and “adopted” grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Westview Cemetery with Rev. Brad Mitchell officiating.

Retha is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Holmes, and sister, Mary Alice Ham.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Retha’s daughter, Becky, wishes to express her heartfelt appreciation for the fine staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center for their care and compassion. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38148-0142. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
