Obituary for Rodney Craig Walker

Rodney C. Walker
December 5, 1956 - June 3, 2019

La Grange-Rodney Craig “Rod” Walker, 62, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019. The youngest of five children, Rod was born December 5, 1956 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to the late Roy Virgil Walker and Janice Mabel Stubbs Walker. Rod’s first wife of 33 years, Patricia Eileen Kelly “Pat” Walker, preceded Rod in death on June 14, 2013.

With a career spanning 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, Rod was dedicated to serving his country and all that she stands for. He retired as an E-7 Gunnery Sergeant. Rod’s passion for the military continued to blaze even after retirement, and he was always ready to share his pride about the time he spent in service. Even in his downtime, Rod could be found watching special programs and series about war and the military.

Though Rod worked hard, he also played hard. He enjoyed time outdoors under the shade tree in his back yard. There he could spend hours tinkering and working with his hands. A 3-D puzzle or a good crossword would help to clear his mind. He loved to kick back and relax with a cold beer in the afternoon while taking in a good crime series, war or history special, or an episode of “Wheel of Fortune.” Upon achieving his perfect frame of mind, was also the best opportunity to reach out to his extended family for a friendly chat. It was nothing uncommon for Rod to make a phone call to loved ones just to let them know what he was thinking about.

There wasn’t anywhere in the United States that Rod couldn’t find his way around. Without a map or GPS, he was able to navigate without ever having to ask for directions. Whether on the road or at home, though, he was likely to crank up Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, or the Allman Brothers. Chances are, wherever you found him he would be wearing well broken in jeans or camo pants possibly getting energized from a Snickers bar with a strong cup of coffee.

At home, a “meat and potatoes” man, Rod was the master of the grill. The scent of red meat cooking filled the neighborhood and sounds of Rod's laughter coming from around the grill still lingers in the air. Rod was quite the jokester. Though his jokes were of debatable quality, he always kept everyone laughing. He was great at distracting and diverting attention, especially when it was to his benefit.

Rod’s one-of-a-kind personality endeared him to close friends and family. There was hardly a place Rod would go were he wasnt coming across a friend. He had the ability to look past what others might see as flaws and see the good in people. He could offer a kind word of encouragement or wisdom, but also administer a firm kick in the ass when well deserved. Those who knew him best understood that he wanted what was best for them and in them.

A memorial service to celebrate Rod’s life will be held at 2pm Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Rouse Funeral Home. A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the memorial service.

Rod is survived by his bride of 5 years, Gina; his two daughters, Meghann and her fiancé, Sam Sasser, and Shannon Bailey and husband, Matt; along with blended family: children from Gina's first marriage Benjamin Wlodyka, Oliver Wlodyka and wife Kaitie, Sydney Vondrasek and husband, Alex; seven grandchildren, Lexi, Keyli, Chole, Tristan, Rex, Olivia, and Noa; three siblings, Gail Foss and husband, Jim, Linda Thole and husband, Alan, Brian Walker and wife, Linda; sister-in-law, Carol and her husband Dale Bosch; and many nieces and nephews, with great nieces and great nephews. Not to be forgotten, his beloved canine companions, Sophie, Cheyenne, Dobie, Ookiee, Ella, Daisy, Sandy and Stubbs. A brother, John, also preceded Rod in death.
